Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Classes 

At the Center for Counseling and Education, we offer Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive yoga classes, led by Chrissy Juliano, MSW, LCSW, RYT, TCTSY-F. We currently offer Individual Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga consultations as well as a Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Class for Women. 

What is Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga?

Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence based treatment for individuals who have experienced traumatic events or suffer from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). TCTSY is grounded in the science of the psychology and neurophysiology of trauma exposure and attachment disruption. The main objective of TCTSY is to use yoga forms as opportunities to notice what we feel in our bodies and to practice making choices about what to do with our bodies. Through yoga, we experiment with:

  • Breathing
  • Moving
  • Strengthening
  • Stretching
  • Resting

Classes are designed for students to be in control of what they are doing with their body at all times. The instructor is there to provide safe, professional guidance and help students focus on particular dynamics (e.g., what muscles they are using, what it feels like to have their feet on the ground, what it feels like to breathe, etc.)

In the TCTSY classes offered at CFCE…

  • No experience is necessary.
  • We strive to make the classes accessible to everybody regardless of physical ability. Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga is a way for us to safely experiment with our body.
  • The presentation of yoga is NOT religious.
  • In group classes, participants will not have to interact with one another, making this class more comfortable for those individuals who find it difficult to be in groups.

Who is the instructor of Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Classes?

Chrissy Juliano, LCSW, RYT, TCTSY-F has completed a 300-hour TCTSY certification program through the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute. She is a member of the International Association of Trauma Sensitive Yoga (IA-TCTSY). To read more about Chrissy, visit her page here.

How can I enroll in Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Classes? 

We currently offer Individual Trauma Sensitive Yoga consultations, as well as a Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Class for Women. Classes are open enrollment.

PLEASE NOTE: Participants are required to be in therapy. Interested clients or clinicians are asked to please contact the office to determine eligibility before enrolling.

To maintain a safe, therapeutic environment, class size is limited to 5. Additional classes will continue to be added based on need. A sign in sheet will be located at the entrance of the building.

Note: Please arrive ten minutes early to get yourself comfortably situated.

Cost:           $15.00 per class

 

What can I expect from a Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga Class?

Wear clothing appropriate for physical activity (sweat pants, t-shirt or whatever is comfortable).

Floor practice is currently offered. We will engage in chair practice as appropriate.

We practice yoga as a way to notice what we feel in our body and to practice making choices about what to do with our body based on what we feel.

We provide a safe, supportive, non judgmental environment.

We do not do hands-on assists.

We discourage competition and encourage exploration of the postures and breathing practices for their own benefit.

We encourage curiosity and interest in the body and encourage each student’s personal exploration of the postures and breathing practices for their own benefit experience in the moment.

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Individual Consultations 

In addition to our small yoga classes, we also offer clients one-on-one yoga consultations with Chrissy Juliano, a therapist/certified yoga instructor trained in Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga.

 What can I expect from a Private Yoga Consultation?

Consultations may cover a variety of needs related to the use of yoga as an adjunctive trauma treatment. Consultations will be tailored to clients’ specific needs and goals.

Examples of topics that may be covered in a yoga consultation are:

  • Introduction or re-introduction to yoga in a safe and private space
  • Recommendation for how to design or modify a yoga program to address personal triggers, challenges, and physical limitations
  • General psychoeducation about trauma and the body and ways in which yoga can help
